Though bands such as Nirvana brought alternative rock to the mainstream in the 90's and 2000's, alternative rock was enjoyed mostly by college teens on college radio stations. This would include REM in the 1980's and as early as some of Joy Divisions music in 1980 such as 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.

Rock bands such as Nirvana are often featured on the rock magazines. This is because they are a global iconic band for the youth (often the rock magazine's target audience). Nirvana's style is very popular in the youth today with flannel shirts and jeans. This means that magazines can make use of style to appeal to their target audience.
